Today in 1870, the U.S. adopts the 15th Amendment which gives African-American the right to finally vote. Following the end of the Civil War the government began taking better steps to support the African-American people. The 13th Amendment which would abolish slavery and the 14th Amendment which called for fair treatment of all U.S. citizens all looked to help. The following 15th Amendment wasted no time in its use, Thomas Peterson-Mundy from Perth Amboy became the first African-American to vote a day later. Although in theory the Amendment was doing good things, it didn’t stop States from placing unfair restrictions on voting rights. The most common of these were literacy tests that all voters were forced to take, but they knew that African-Americans would not be able to pass them.
